A 22-year-old Independence man was killed early Saturday when the car he was driving veered off the road and hit a tree at Cogan Drive and 28th Terrace Court, according to a release by the Independence Police Department Traffic Safety Unit.

A 21-year-old man, also of Independence, was a passenger in the 1995 Ford Escort station wagon. He was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center with life threatening injuries, police say.

Crash investigators say the silver wagon was going south on Cogan at a "high rate of speed" when the driver lost control of the vehicle. It left the roadway and smashed into the tree, according to police.

It happened at 2:55 a.m. The accident site is in southeast Independence between Lee's Summit Road and Missouri 291.

The accident remains under investigation.

Police are not releasing names of the men until Monday so that family members can be notified.

Last Saturday, two separate accidents claimed the life of two Independence residents. One was a single-vehicle crash and the other was a motorcycle vs. a vehicle.

Saturday's accident is the sixth traffic fatality in Independence this year.
