Top Metal Recycling is open for business.

Andre Coffer, the company’s owner, confirmed Friday that the company, located at 1212 W. U.S. 24, is open and under new management. The Examiner could not confirm Thursday if it was open.

The company has been the focus of an Independence police investigation into the purchase and selling of illegal scrap metal.

On Thursday, police charged two men, Leonard J. Miller, of Independence, and Anthony C. Dismuke, of Sugar Creek, of being in violation of a state statute, which prohibits merchandise practices when metals belonging to cemeteries, political subdivisions, electric cooperatives and utilities are purchased.

Another man, Carlos J. Bueno, was taken into custody and later deported as he was an illegal alien.

Coffer has said that the company, the only licensed scrap dealer in Independence, is currently working on new business policies to prevent the purchase of illegal scrap materials.
