  • An Independence man wanted on warrants for first-degree armed robbery and possession of dangerous drugs was arrested after a lengthy pursuit by police on Saturday afternoon.
Shane E. Harvey, 26, of Independence, faces charges of assault and vandalism following the pursuit, which happened at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
According to reports, police responded to a complaint about a man who assaulted a woman in the Pacific and River area. Upon arrival, police saw Harvey in that area. Once he saw that police had arrived, Harvey ran, following the fence line at the old AGCO industrial complex.
Eluding police, Harvey entered a ditch and hid there but was seen by a pursuing officer, who gave chase. Following the ditch, the officer came upon a half concealed drainage pipe and, crouching down, saw Harvey inside.
Police brought the K9 unit and warned him several times. Harvey eventually emerged, struggled with police and was arrested and taken into custody.
Harvey, who lives at the Hawthorne Place Apartments in Independence, was wanted on a first-degree armed robbery charge and armed criminal action from August 2010 in Independence. He also was charged with possession of dangerous drugs.
Harvey’s bond was set at $575,000 total for the three charges. Court records indicate that Harvey has numerous other convictions, including traffic violations and drug possession.
“It’s a very good job by officers in getting this man off the street,” said Tom Gentry, police spokesperson.
