Doris L. (Heaviland) VunCannon, 93, passed away at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Mo. She was born May 13, 1919, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Leon Charles Heaviland and Susan H. Bess.

Doris L. (Heaviland) VunCannon, 93, passed away at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Mo. She was born May 13, 1919, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Leon Charles Heaviland and Susan H. Bess.

She and her husband, Jesse, and children moved to Dayton, Ohio, in 1942. She worked at Carnahan Jewelers during the time she assisted her husband in their family business, Van’s Super Service in Eaton, Ohio.  After moving to Miami, Fla., in 1978 she worked in the management office of the Mobile Home park where they lived. During all of her married life she was a wonderful hostess to many travelin missionaries and others who stayed at their home and shared meals with them. They moved to Independence after Hurricane Andrew struck in 1992 and she was a devoted member of the South Crysler Restoration Branch for the last 20 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her daughters, Nancy C. Fletcher and Joan J. Sloan, her grandson Steven J. VunCannon, her great grandson, Matthew M. Gilmore,  her daughter-in-law Carolyn Sue VunCannon of Ohio,  and her husband of 74 years, Jesse W. VunCannon. She leaves two sons, Barry C. VunCannon and wife, Joan, of Independence, Mo., and Jack W. VunCannon of Arcanum, Ohio, three Grandchildren, Deborah L. Gilmore and husband, Eugene, of Germany, James A. VunCannon and wife Shellie of Independence, Lynn M. Sullivan and husband, Gregory of VA, Four Great Grandchildren, Alexander J. VunCannon and wife, Ashlon of Independence, Victoria E. VunCannon of Independence, Liam G. Sullivan and Meghan S. Sullivan of Va.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2013, at South Crysler Restoration Branch Church, 16101 E Salisbury Rd, Independence, MO, with visitation 2-3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will be Monday morning at 9 a.m. at Mound Grove Cemetery.  Condolences may be made at charterfunerals.com.
