  • The Blue Springs boys tennis team is entering the district tournaments next week on a high note.
    The Wildcats took five out of six singles matches on the way to a 7-2 Suburban Big Six victory over Lee’s Summit North Friday indoors at the Metro East Tennis Center in Blue Springs.
    “It was great to get it in, and a really good win for us,” coach Jody McClain said after her Wildcats (7-3) finished third in the Big Six with a 3-2 mark. “Now we’re ready for districts next week.”
    Mitchell Wilhoit the Wildcats in singles, scoring a decisive 6-1, 6-0 victory.
    “I can’t say enough about the way Mitchell played today,” McClain said. “He was competitive on every single point. He was in a zone today.”
    Sam Phillips won a 10-3 super tiebreaker to win his match, while Caleb Boyd, Brice Webb and Greg Evans each added singles victories.
    Boyd and Chad Stohlman teamed for a No. 2 doubles win, while Webb and Evans triumphed at No. 3.
    The Wildcats and Big Six champion Blue Springs South get byes in next week’s team district tournament and will play Tuesday. Truman and Fort Osage meet 3:30 p.m. Monday and the winner meets Blue Springs South at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at Young Park. William Chrisman plays North at 3:30 p.m. Monday and the winner meets the Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Young Park. The semifinal winners meet at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday for the championship. The individual district tournament is set for Thursday and Friday at Lee’s Summit North.
