The Grain Valley girls soccer team clinched its second consecutive Missouri River Valley Conference title Wednesday by winning 2-0 on the road against Pleasant Hill.
Nathalia Barr scored the first Grain Valley goal in the opening minute on a Reighan Childers assist. Childers then scored in the fifth minute on Maddie Gangl’s assist.
“I’m very happy with the team’s conference play this year,” Grain Valley coach Aleana Balistreri said. “We were the team to beat and we held on to our title. We scored extremely early and played a lot of offense the rest of the game.
“Pleasant Hill’s keeper did a great stopping our shots the whole rest of the game. We just could not get the ball past her. Our passing tonight was right on, and our two early goals just set the tone of the game.”
Darby Scharfenkamp made three saves for the Eagles (13-5, 7-1) to record the shutout.
Grain Valley topped Harrisonville 4-2 in MRVC action on Tuesday by registering two goals in each half. Kali Carson scored twice and Gangl and Sam Berg each scored. Childers tallied two assists and Devan Fairfield had one.
WILLIAM CHRISMAN 1, BELTON 0: Allyssa Kyle kicked the William Chrisman girls soccer team to a Suburban Middle Seven victory Wednesday at Belton.
Her goal on a penalty kick in the 56th minute stood up for the win Wednesday night as the Bears improve to 3-8 and 5-9. Jordyn Atagi made three saves for the shutout.
“The girls played very well defensively and responded well from last night (6-1 loss to Fort Osage),” William Chrisman coach John Straub said.
BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH 2, LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 1: A banner Blue Springs South season will be remembered for many things.
Right near the top of that list will be defeating perennial power Lee’s Summit North twice in Suburban Big Six Conference play.
Sarah Smedley scored on Abbey Widick’s assist in the 34th minute and Mollie Maupin scored what proved to be the winning goal on Beth Landon’s assist in the 50th minute as South stunned visiting North Tuesday night.
“The defense has been our key and opportunist goal scoring,” South coach Todd Findley said. “Maupin is just a freshman and is playing outstanding and has been our catalyst.”
South tied North for second place in the conference at 5-4 and improved to 10-5-1 overall heading into district play next week.
TRUMAN 10, RUSKIN 0: Amber Young scored two goals and assisted on another to power host Truman to a Suburban Middle Six victory Tuesday. The game was stopped at halftime because of the mercy rule.
Page 2 of 2 - Kelsey Waterworth scored two goals and Elana Fuerler, Kylie Waterworth, Sandra Chiles, Maddie Rowlette and Karlee Welch one each as Truman claimed its second victory of the season to improve to 2-13 and 2-7.
