The City of Independence Public Works Department will sponsor an electronics recycling collection event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 17 in the large parking lot bordered by Walnut, Liberty, Kansas and Osage, one block south of the Independence Square.

The event is open to the public, and no proof of residency will be required to dispose of used consumer electronics.

A sliding scale of fees for disposing of the electronic equipment will allow Surplus Exchange, the city’s event partner, to pay its staff to transport the recyclable equipment to the de-manufacturer.

The fees are as follows: computer monitors, $11; televisions, 19-inch or smaller, $16; 20-inch or larger, $21; consoles, $26; and projection or larger, $36; stereos, small fax machines, VCRs and scanners, $6; desktop printers and large fax machines and scanners, $11; large printers, $26.

The following items may be disposed of for free: computers, keyboards, mice, personal printers, cell phones, pagers, hand-held games and CD players.
