  • State Rep. Will Kraus has won the Republican nomination for the 8th District Missouri Senate race.
Unofficial election results from Tuesday’s primary show that Kraus, from Lee’s Summit, defeated Blue Springs resident and state Rep. Bryan Pratt by 527 votes. Blue Springs resident and state Rep. Gary Dusenberg came in third.
Kraus snagged 9,508 votes, or 39.85 percent, of the votes compared to Pratt, who got 8,981, or 37.64 percent, of the votes. Dusenberg had 5,373 votes, or 22.52 percent.
While some may consider Kraus’s victory an upset, Kraus himself didn’t feel that it was.
“We were confident all along that the truth would come out,” Kraus said when contacted Tuesday night.
Kraus attributed his victory to a grassroots campaign focused on exposing some of the incorrect information offered by Pratt, specifically allegations about Kraus’s failure to cut taxes and his so-called liberal beliefs.
“Voters in the 8th District took this week and really looked at the voting records,” he said. “They discovered that I was the only one in this race who passed a tax cut.”
And then there was the money. While Pratt far exceeded his opponents in raising campaign funds, Kraus said the election proved big money doesn’t always win.
“All the money (Pratt had) couldn’t buy the race.”
Pratt could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon or evening.
However, Prat did comment on his Facebook page about the results, thanking his family, friends and supporters.
"I am sad to report we lost the race. I always said I did not want politics to define my life - I am looking forward to spending time with my family, and beginning the next chapter in my life. I am so thankful to my friends and family that supported me during this election - I am certainly rich with friends and family," Pratt wrote.
Dusenberg also took to Facebook to thank his supporters.
"Would like to congratulate Will Kraus on his victory this evening. I would again also like to send my deepest appreciation and thanks to all my supporters and volunteers who have been such a great help during this campaign. I wish Will and his family all the best and look forward to working with him," Dusenberg wrote.
No Democrats have filed for the November election race for the 8th District and only one third-party candidate, Libertarian Kevin Parr, has filed.
