Brenda Kathleen Flathers, 54, of Independence, Mo., Daughter – Mother – Grandmother – Aunt – Friend died in her home on Feb. 25, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She will be remembered as one who loved her family, faith, music and life. An independent woman who personified self-determination. “If your ship hasn’t come-in, swim out to it “and” don’t wait for life to happen to you, make it happen for you,” would be the messages her living would give us. She would surely add, “Each day is a blessing, move away from the negative in it and love without reservation.”

She leaves her beloved daughters, Julie Long and Tara (Jason) Crownover; her grandchildren, Michela Fox, Nicholas and Isabella Long and Brooke Crownover; her siblings, Cynthia (Phil) Grosse, Donna (Michael) Martin, Donnie Flathers, Rhonda (John) Green, Kimberly Nguyen, John (Kim) Flathers, Joan (Bruce) Jones, Christopher (Amanda) Flathers; and many beloved nephews and nieces. She is survived by her Father, Donald Flathers, and Mother, Laura Virginia Flathers of Independence, Mo. With much affection she leaves her loving partner of 18 years, Rick Danner, who provided selfless care and companionship, especially in her time of greatest need.

The family wishes to express deep appreciation for the patience and generosity of her employer of many years, Billup Snyder Insurance Co., of Blue Springs, Mo., and her close friend and co-worker Sandy Taylor.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 29, at Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St., Blue Springs, Mo., with prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 S.
