There will be pterodactyls in Blue Springs this Friday.

The Blue Springs City Theatre plans on performing “NigHt of tHe PterodActyls” beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center at Blue Springs High School.

Michelle Brown, board president for the theater group, said as many as 34 kids will help tell the story, with some children as young as 4.

“We’ve always had big productions,” Brown said. “Big productions are always challenging, especially when it comes to kids.”

Performance dates for the show are Friday, Saturday and Sunday and March 4, 5, 6, 7. All shows except Sunday are at 7:30 p.m. Sunday shows are at 2 p.m.

The story centers on 12-year-old Whit, who thinks Carly, a new arrival to a South Carolina town, is the ugliest girl in the universe. But she’s also the smartest – and obsessed with dinosaurs. As Carly becomes obsessed with dinosaurs, Whit becomes obsessed with Carly, so much so that he has trouble explaining his feelings  for her to his male group of friends known as the Gross Associates.

Carly then finds a nest of pterodactyl eggs in a neighbor’s rose garden and the whole town is turned upside down. The National Guard is called in and, in the end, the pterodactyl eggs are excavated on live television. With the glaring lights, the eggs begin to hatch... or do they?

This year’s production was somewhat turned upside down, too, with the ongoing construction at Blue Springs High School. Unlike in the past, cast members had to practice at the Liggett Trail Education Center on Liggett Road.

“It was challenging, but nothing that couldn’t be dealt with,” Brown said.

The spring performance, however, has been cancelled because of construction.

“We’ve had to cancel them in the past for different reasons, so it’s not anything new,” she said.

Remaining shows in 2010 include “Beauty and the Beast” in July and “Rented Christmas: The Musical” in December.

Tickets for the upcoming show are $8 for adults and $6 for children and senior citizens. They can be purchased at the door before each performance or by logging onto the theater group’s Web site at www.bluespringscitytheatre.com.
