  • Jenn Minnis did not know she wanted to be a teacher until college. Then, after some time spent as a tutor, she realized that she wanted to do something that made a difference.
I had this great experience in college when I was tutoring and working with an individual with special needs, she said. That is when I knew that I wanted to become a teacher.
Minnis, a history teacher at Blue Springs High School, was named the 2013 Blue Springs Teacher of the Year during a breakfast Friday at the Blue Springs Central Office. She has eight years in education, the last six being at Blue Springs High School as an American and world geography teacher. She will now be eligible to compete in the Missouri State Teacher of the Year program. After completing an application and interview, the finalists are named this summer. The winner is announced in the fall.
“I am so excited. She truly represents what the Blue Springs School District strives for,” said David Adams, principal at Blue Springs High School. “She is an outstanding educator and has a great relationship with her kids. She is a leader for the building, and I couldnt be any prouder of her or for Blue Springs High School.”
Minnis said she is a little overwhelmed by the recognition, but believes it is a huge honor to be recognized in this way.
“My favorite part of being a teacher is getting to know the kids,” she said. “I like figuring out what makes them tick and how their minds work.”
Minnis said she feels validated as a teacher, knowing that her colleagues are seeing the good work she is doing within the classroom.
As a former Wildcat, I am truly honored to represent the school and district in this way, said Minnis, who is a graduate of Blue Springs high School. This makes me feel good because it shows that someone is seeing how hard I am working for my kids.
