  • Community of Christ has made history with the election of a woman to serve as president of the churchs Council of Twelve Apostles. This is the first time in the churchs history and woman has been elected to serve in the role.
    Linda L. Booth was set apart to serve as president of its Council of Twelve Apostles April 17. The announcement was made and the setting apart followed during a legislative session of the churchs 2013 World Conference.
    The Council of Twelve is the churchs lead missionary quorum, responsible for leading the churchs global mission by inviting people to experience Christs peace.
    Booth, who is from Independence, was also one of the first women ordained an apostle in 1998. She is currently assigned to the Southern USA Mission Field and also serves as the director of communications for the worldwide church. Her past assignments include serving as secretary of the Council of Twelve Apostles, director of Herald Publishing House and liaison with Contemporary Christian Ministries. She was pastor of the Olathe Congregation in Kansas and counselor to the president of the Quorum of High Priests.
    Booth has a bachelor of science in journalism and communication from the University of Kansas and a master of arts in religion from Community of Christ Seminary through Graceland University.
    Booths professional involvement includes serving on the boards of directors for Olathe Region United Way, Overland Park South Rotary Club, Kansas School Public Relations Association and Camp Quality. She was the founding editor for Kansas City Parent Magazine, editor of Olathe Life Newspaper and director of community relations and information for the Olathe School District in Kansas.
    Community of Christ, which just concluded its 2013 World Conference, has 250,000 members in more than 50 nations. The World Conference is held triennially at the denominations International Headquarters in Independence.
