Melvin "Mel" L. Horky, 86, of Independence, Mo., passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, in Kansas City, Mo.

Mel was born March 14, 1927, in Stauton, Ill. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked for McDonnell Douglas for over 30 years, retiring in 1986, while there he received the Presidential Award for exemplary service. Mel was preceded in death by parents, Anna and Florian Horky.

Survivors include wife of 65 years, Ve Horky; daughters, Sandy Andachter and her husband, Greg, of Independence, Mo.; son, Eric Horky of Topeka, Kan.; grandchildren, Julie Boos (Patrick) of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Angela Shadduck (Darren) of Bentonville, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Landon Boos, Brett, Brooke and Bryton Shadduck; brother, Frederick Horky and his wife, Linda, of Indian Trail, N.C.; several extended family and friends.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, at Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 30000 Valor Drive, Grain Valley, with a visitation at 10 a.m. He will be laid to rest in Swan Lake Memorial Park, Grain Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Hospice or Timothy Lutheran Church.
