Tracey Elmore

Occupation category: Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks

Job: Management Analyst

Employer: City of Independence.

How many hours do you work every week? “40.”

What do you like most about the job? “The job has a lot of variety so I get to do a lot of different things. For example, one week I may focus on gathering data, the next week I’ll focus on analyzing that data, and the following week I may be doing interviews.”

What do you like least about the job? “It can be very frustrating when recommendations that I offer in the hopes of improving a department’s productivity and/or improving customer service are not implemented.”

What would you rather be doing? “I want a job where I feel like I’m helping people and in at least some small way, making a difference in the world.”

What do you want to be doing in 10 years? “It’s my dream to work for a think tank that issues policy papers and other documents to help public officials make policy decisions.”

Is this your only job? “Yes, although my school work sometimes makes me feel like I have a second job!”

How far do you live from work? “I live near the Kansas City International Airport.  It’s 22 miles from my driveway to the parking lot at city hall.”

Is the price of gas affecting your ability to do your job and get to work? “The price of gas isn’t having a direct impact on my ability to do my job or get to work, but I did recently stop driving my gas guzzling SUV and opted for a small economy car. The lower mpg on the SUV was killing my budget.”

What training or education did this job require: “The job requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, public administration or a related field; and four to six years of experience.”

Did your employer do your training or was it outside training or education: “I have received some training that was paid for by the City, but I earned and paid for all of my college training on my own time and money.”

Do you have health insurance: “Yes, I have health insurance that’s provided by the city. I pay a monthly fee for this benefit.”

Do you have paid vacation time: “Yes, I receive paid vacation time.”

Do you have retirement benefits: “Yes, I have retirement benefits through LAGERS.”

What do you think about future of jobs in America: “I haven’t studied the job market, so I’m not really sure how to answer this question.  From the little that I know, it seems that it’s more difficult to get a job with a satisfactory salary and benefits unless you have at least some advanced education.”
