A pair of strong pitching performances led to a split in an American Legion Zone 2 East doubleheader between the Blue Springs Rod’s Sports Athletics and Oak Grove Post 379 Tuesday night.

Thad Madsen threw a complete-game win in game one as Oak Grove posted an 8-3 win. Eric Cloninger, with some relief help from Tyler Barth and Kyle Roberts, pitched the A’s to a 10-2 win in game two at Odessa High School.

“You have to tip your cap to Cloninger,” Oak Grove coach Kerry Shaw said. “He kept us off balance all game, and then Barth came in and got some key outs for them.”

Barth also provided some clout at the plate in the second game, capping the Athletics’ seven-run sixth inning with a three-run homer. The A’s (17-12, 12-6 Zone 2 East) led just 3-2 entering the top of the sixth.

Tyler Johnson led Oak Grove had an RBI double for Oak Grove (23-14, 12-6).

In the first game, catcher Tyler Robinson provided a two-strike, two-out, two-run single in the fourth to break a scoreless tie.

“It was pretty clutch,” Shaw said of Robinson’s hit. “That was big.”

Matt Estes, who suffered the loss in game two, went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI to lead Oak Grove at the plate. Johnson and Derek Kelton each went 2-for-3.

Madsen only struck out two but walked just one.

“Thad really kept them off balance with a good change-up all game,” Shaw said.

Tyler Reed went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the A’s, who scored all three of their runs in the seventh after falling behind 8-0.

LEE’S SUMMIT POST 189 AUXILIARY OUTLAWS 26-6, PARKVILLE POST 318 2-2: Brad Phillips belted a three-run home run and Austin Hill also homered as the Outlaws pummelled Parkville Post 318 26-2 in the first game of a Zone 2 West doubleheader.

Jake Dahlgren earned the victory. Kyle Guzman then pitched the Outlaws (14-10, 8-4) to a 6-2 win in the second game to complete the sweep.

RAYTOWN POST 596 3-3, ROBERT L. CLOUR POST 189 BULLDOGS 0-4: First-game starter Logan Halil pitched three innings to save the win for Taylor LaPlante as the Bulldogs held off Raytown Post 596 4-3 to salvage a split in a Zone 2 West doubleheader. The Bulldogs (16-10, 13-9 Zone 2 West) got two runs in the first and two in the second and held on. Mike Lynch suffered the loss for Raytown (20-11, 14-6).

Cody Robinson pitched a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in the first game. Halil, who had four strikeouts in each appearance, took the loss despite allowing just one earned run.
