A slow offensive first half prevented the St. Mary’s girls basketball team from capturing third place in the Crossroads Conference Showdown on Thursday.

The Trojans scored only eight points in the first half and eventually fell to Sherwood 49-25 at Van Horn High School.

St. Mary’s (7-14, 5-6 conference) improved in the second half, but it was too late as Sherwood had already amassed a 27-8 advantage.

“We couldn’t hit anything,” St. Mary’s coach Krista Daniels said. “We couldn’t finish. We got better in the second, but it was that first half that hurt us.”

Nina Gavoli paced the Trojans with eight points while Kelsey Salmon led Sherwood with 13.
