To the editor:

Esther Hoover (letters, Dec. 17, “What if the Mohler men are actually innocent?”) asked some heartfelt questions. I hope that in her private moments she is not content to stop there. As a member of the Elefson clan, and a great aunt to my children, Mrs. Hoover represents a large and well-respected family in the Independence and Lamoni areas, a family I once felt proud to marry into and a family my six children still call their own.

As their mother, I hope you will allow me to ask the writer a heartfelt question of my own: Will you give them, the accusers, the same benefit of the doubt you have given the accused? As both sides prepare for trial, I wonder if you will watch my children from a distance or if you will show them the same warmth and respect they have always shown toward you. They are, after all, your family too.
