Independence police are investigating an armed robbery late Tuesday at the North American Savings Bank on 23rd Street.

The bank is at 11400 E. 23rd St., several blocks west of Crysler Avenue.

A white man in his early 60s entered the bank at 5 p.m., according to Independence Police Department Sgt. Carl Perry. He told bank employees to give him cash, Perry said. The man did not brandish a gun or hand employees a note.

“He made movements toward the coat he was wearing,” Perry said. “He tried to indicate he had a gun.”

The man ran east from the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No one was injured.

Three FBI agents and four Independence officers went to the scene to investigate. Bank robberies are investigated primarily by federal agents because bank currency is FDIC-insured money.

Bank surveillance cameras captured the robbery. Police tried to get the images and video to the news media Tuesday night but were having technical difficulties, Perry said.

Police are asking for anyone with any amount of information in the case to call them at 816-325-7330 or the CrimeStoppers hot line at 816-474-TIPS.
