A 16-year-old girl in custody at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center was pronounced Saturday afternoon at Children's Mercy Hospital.

A release from the Circuit Court said the girl had told Family Court detention workers late Saturday morning that she didn't feel well. The release said workers checked on her six times from 11:54 a.m. to 1 p.m., when she was found unresponsive.

Workers performed first aid, but she was pronounced dead after her arrival at the hospital. The Kansas City Police Department was called in to investigate the circumstances.

She had been at the detention center since  Feb. 10.
