The Blue Springs Rod's Sports discovered what the old adage of "a game of inches" meant Sunday.

The Blue Springs Rod's Sports discovered what the old adage of "a game of inches" meant Sunday.

After dominating the Oak Grove Bats 14-4 in the opening round of the American Legion Baseball Missouri Zone 2 Tournament Saturday, the A's took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning of a winners' bracket game against the Sedalia Post 642 Travelers on Sunday.

But Sedalia scored two runs in the top of the ninth, using a key hit that just eluded an A's outfielder, to post a 5-4 win.

"The kids played extremely well," A's manager Mike Rooney said. "We just had one bad break, We had a ball barely get past our center fielder. It's a game of inches and we were on the wrong side of it this time.

"So now we have to win two."

The A's rebounded in the losers' bracket later Sunday to rout St. Joseph Post 11 17-4 to make it to a 4 p.m. championship game against Sedalia. Because of that loss, the A's will have to beat the Travelers twice Monday to advance to this week's American Legion Missouri State Championships at their own Hidden Valley Park.

The A's capitalized on nine St. Joseph errors and pounded out 17 hits to win on the 10-run mercy rule in seven innings late Sunday. Kyle Seithel hit a triple and two singles and drove in two runs and Jordan Martinez had two hits and two RBIs to lead the A's (33-16). Greg Wisner, Bret Sutton, Tyler Barth and Tyler Reed each added two hits and an RBI and Matt McHenry had two hits.

Kyle Hetherington went the first four innings for the win with relief help from Andrew Cottle and McHenry.

Seithel suffered the loss against Sedalia. Logan Smith hit the RBI double to center to tie it and Ivan Pyszka put Sedalia ahead with an RBI single.

Cottle had a hit and two RBIs, Seithel collected two hits and an RBI and Wisner added a pair of singles for the A's against Sedalia.

On Saturday, the 14-4 win over the Oak Grove Bats was the 900th all-time for the A's program. McHenry swung the big stick in that game with a triple, two singles and four RBIs and Cottle slugged a two-run homer in the four-run fifth.

Martinez added two hits and two RBIs, Wisner and Sutton each had two hits and an RBI and Dan McGonigle contributed two hits for the A's, who ended it early in the eighth with four runs. Andrew Rider earned the win, going six innings.

Zak Ansteine suffered the loss for Oak Grove, which was eliminated with another loss to St. Joseph in the losers' bracket.
