Richard G. “Rick” Matthews, 62, of Independence, Missouri, passed away February 16, 2010 following a long battle with cancer.

A time of celebration to honor his life will be 3 p.m., Saturday, February 27, 2010 at DW Newcomer’s Sons Noland Road Chapel, Independence, Mo.  Visitation will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Funeral Home.

Rick was born December 8, 1947 in Springfield, Mo., to William and Waneta Matthews. He was employed by Carter Waters Corporation, Kansas City, MO, for 23 years as V.P. of Information Technology. Rick’s love of music was in the forefront of his entire life. He played the guitar and sang in several bands. He grew up surrounded by phenomenal musicians, as his father was one of the original Jordanaires. He blessed his family in sharing his musical talent and has passed this love on to his grandchildren. He enjoyed camping, hiking and exploring the beauty of nature. Most of all he loved being with family. His grandchildren were his greatest delight and they adored him. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him and loved him.

Rick was preceded in death by his son, Scott Matthews and his father, Bill Matthews.

Rick is survived by his mother, Waneta Matthews, Springfield, Mo.; wife, Constance Matthews, Independence, Mo.; brother, Gary Matthews, Montgomery, Alabama; sister, Julie Kays, Springfield, Mo.; three stepchildren: Chauntel Sanford, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Meranda Schwelm, Media, PA; and Ryan Wall, Independence, Mo.; two son-in-laws: John Sanford, Lee’s Summit; and Bob Schwelm, Media, PA; six grandchildren: Brenden Scott Sanford, Elijah Sanford, Gabriella Sanford, Ruby Schwelm, Addison Schwelm, and Dylan Wall.
