The inaugural White Out Cancer 5K Race and Family Fun Run is Sept. 17 at Waterfall Park, 4501 S. Bass Pro Drive,  Independence.

Jonathan White, a longtime Oak Grove resident who now lives in Grain Valley, is the inspiration for the event. White was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, an agressive brain tumor, in February 2010.

The race will raise money for cancer patients and their families who have to seek expensive treatment away from home.

Runners can register at www.sportkc.org/whiteoutcancer for $25 until 5 p.m. Sept. 14. Late registration is $30 and begins at 7 a.m. on the day of the event.

The race begins at 8 a.m. and the fun run at 9 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded to the overall winners and top 3 finishers in their categories. Participants who pre-register will receive a t-shirt for the 5K and a inspirational band for the fun run.
