MARCH 27: Discover Nature Families: Woodcock Hike – 1-3 p.m. for families with children ages 5 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Join a naturalist for a hike. With games, riddles, songs and other activities, learn how to maximize the fun and learning opportunities along the trail. Bring a snack to eat somewhere along the trail. MARCH 27: Passport to Adventure Kickoff – 1-4 p.m. for families with children ages 5 and older at Bass Pro Shops in Independence. Interpretive Site Coalition’s Passport to Adventure Hunt is about to begin. Your ticket to an adventure exploring Kansas City’s history, science, and nature is here at the kickoff event at Bass Pro in Independence. No registration is required; walk-ins are welcome. APRIL 2: Missouri Arbor Day – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for adults, families and groups at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Celebrate Missouri Arbor Day by taking a hike beneath these towering giants that grace the trails at Burr Oak Woods. The first 200 adults, families or groups may choose a beautiful native tree to take home with them, while supplies last. Walk-ins are welcome, no registration required. APRIL 3: Arbor Day Tree Hunt – 10-11:30 a.m. for families with children ages 8 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Celebrate Missouri State Arbor Day weekend hunting for native trees using GPS units. No prior GPS experience is necessary. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
APRIL 3 & 10: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day at Lake City Range and Training Center near Blue Springs (28900 Argo Road). Jake Jacoby is the instructor. Students must be age 11 or older and must attend both sessions in order to qualify. Pre-register by calling 816-655-6250.
APRIL 6, 7 & 8: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 6-9:30 p.m. each day at Fort Osage Vo-Tech Center in Independence. Students must be age 11 or older and must attend all three sessions in order to qualify. Pre-register by calling 816-650-7183.
APRIL 7: Birding: Early Migration Bird Hike – 8-10 a.m. for ages 10 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Early migrating species will be arriving. Be prepared to hike. Birders of all levels are welcome. Youth ages 10-15 must be accompanied by an adult. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
APRIL 9 & 10: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Community Center. Mike Mansell is the instructor. APRIL 10: Discover Nature Families: Owl Prowl – 7-9 p.m. for families with children ages 6 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Learn about all the owl species found in Missouri. Discover the important role they play in the web of life by dissecting real owl pellets. As you silently prowl the woods and prairies searching for these nocturnal predators, help your child discover the importance of slowing down and taking time to observe nature carefully. APRIL 16 & 17: Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Education Class – 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Sugar Creek Police/Fire Department. Sandy Hedges is the instructor. Students must be age 11 or older and must attend both sessions in order to qualify. Pre-register by calling 816-655-6250.
APRIL 17: Discover Nature Families: Family Explore Adventure Day – 2-8 p.m. for families with children ages 6 and older at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area in Blue Springs. Day of outdoor camping, fishing, canoeing, archery, geo-caching, letterboxing, safety, outdoor cooking and more. Stay for an hour or stay for the entire evening. Bring your own picnic supper and enjoy it together under the pavilion 5-5:30 p.m. Evening will conclude with a campfire, music, stories and s’mores. Please call 816-228-3766 to register.
