  • Blue Springs will honor David Cook next week in a ceremony at Thomas Ultican Elementary.
Superintendent Paul Kinder said at the Blue Springs Board of Education meeting Monday that the driveway at Ultican will be named after Cook, a Blue Springs South High School alumni and 2008 winner of "American Idol." Cook attended the elementary school and will be at the event.
“The board has been wanting to recognize him for quite a while, and this was an appropriate way of doing that,” he said. “With his background at Thomas Ultican, we thought this was a great opportunity.”
The David Cook event is scheduled for 11 a.m. Nov. 20 at Thomas Ultican Elementary, 1813 Main St., directly across from the Central Office.
Cook was raised in Blue Springs and lived in the area until he competed and ultimately won the seventh season of the popular Fox reality show. His most recent album, “This Loud Morning,” was released in 2011.
“He is a pretty busy man,” Kinder said about Cook. “We have been working with his manager for the last several months to find a time when he could be here. It just so happened that he was going to be in the area for the holidays and the kids were still in school. We wanted to make sure that the students at Thomas Ultican could participate in this. Everyone at the school is very excited.”
