The Salvation Army has two holiday programs in which the community is invited to participate. Adopt-A-Family provides gifts and toys for more than 3,000 families in need in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The program, sponsored by KUDL Radio, is entirely online this year. Individuals may log onto www.KUDL.com now through Dec. 4 to choose a family to adopt.

Each year, The Salvation Army provides thousands of gifts, toys and holiday food boxes to families in need in the metropolitan area.

“We are facing a greater challenge this year because of the economy,” said Major Jeffrey Smith, divisional commander of The Salvation Army in Kansas City. “Requests for emergency assistance are up 30 percent from a year ago and we anticipate at least that much of an increase in individuals and families seeking Christmas assistance this year.”

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program begins Friday at Oak Park Mall, Zona Rosa and select Wal-Mart stores throughout the area. Each Angel Tree features dozens of angel tags, each one representing a local child in need and their gift wishes. Shoppers or employees pick a tag and buy the gifts listed and return the gifts to the tree to be distributed to the children. This program provides toys to more than 10,000 children in the Kansas City area.

The Salvation Army nationally is also teaming up this year with J.C. Penney for an online giving program to benefit children and seniors. The Salvation Army Angel Giving Tree Online Program provides people across the country with the ability to adopt Angels from their local community through a Web site located at www.jcp.com/angel. Customers will be guided through a short online Angel selection process.  After choosing an Angel online, the donor will receive an e-mail with details including the child’s wish list and delivery instructions.
