The city of Independence warns restaurant owners and other area business owners of a new scam that has appeared in Independence and in Kansas City.

The owner of an Independence food establishment contacted the city’s Health Department with concerns about a caller identifying himself as a Health Department inspector, requesting security access codes and other confidential information.

“We are advising businesses to use caution in these situations,” Health Department Director Larry Jones said in a release Friday. “The Health Department does not call in advance to request confidential information by telephone or to schedule a routine inspection.

Inspectors wear city name badges and carry Health Department badges, which are similar to police badges. They always have these with them when doing an inspection.”

Business owners who are contacted by this person or who believe that they may have already been contacted and have given out confidential information should contact the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7300 or the Missouri Attorney General’s office in Kansas City at 816-889-5000.

Call 816-325-7803 if you have questions or concerns about the identity of an individual claiming to be a Health Department representative.
