The busiest travel day of the year and dense fog on Wednesday combined to cause several accidents in Independence.

Police were working an injury accident at 39th Street and Missouri 291 around 2:45 p.m. Three to four vehicles were involved. Injuries occurred, but none were life threatening, according to police, who didn’t have any further information. The accident slowed traffic on Missouri 291.

Another accident involving a motorcycle happened near Winner Road and Sterling Avenue. Injuries were minor.

Independence police on Wednesday afternoon shut down a stretch of Missouri 7 south of U.S. 24 as investigators conducted a reconstruction on a three-vehicle injury accident that happened around noon last Friday.

One vehicle was going north on Missouri 7, crossed the center line and smashed into a vehicle going south, according to police. The collision pushed the southbound vehicle into a third vehicle behind the one hit.

A 74-year-old man, who was in the southbound vehicle, died on Sunday, police said. The man was injured but stable at the scene. He was transported to an area hospital.
