  • Finally! The need to beat the heat

  • Eastern Jackson County residents have been waiting for it - the summer heat. Hot temperatures means fun at the swimming pool and area spray parks, and the rise in temperatures is causing people to flock to these areas to cool down and have some summer fun.

1 Two options. There are two spray parks in Independence. One is at McCoy Park, U.S. 24 and North Delaware across the street from the Truman Library. The other is at Rotary Park, 24th Street and Hardy Avenue.
2 Fun in the sun. Each park or water playground has a variety of water features including buckets that dump water, sprays that shoot from the ground and water cannons that shoot water at other children. So no matter which one is visited, there are many ways to beat the summer heat.
3 Free fun. There is no admission to visit either spray park. The parks are open every day during normal park hours, sunrise to sunset. A word of caution, there are no life guards or other supervision. Parents are responsible for their own children while at the spray park.
4 More than just getting wet. For those who want a break from the water, both parks have other recreation opportunities including playgrounds and open spaces for a game of kickball or soccer. There are also shelter accommodations at both parks for lunch or to get a break from the sun.
