Take a tour of the second floor of Harry S. Truman’s home on the National Parks Service website.

When Bess Truman passed away in 1982, she left her Independence home to the United States – with one condition. As long as her daughter, Margaret Truman Daniel, was alive, the second floor of the home would remain closed to the public.

Although Bess Truman’s will granted Margaret permission to stay on the second floor of the home for one week a year, she never stayed in the home after her parents’ deaths.

After Margaret passed away in 2008, the National Parks Service decided not to open the second floor of the president’s home because of preservation concerns.
