Firefighters over the weekend battled two blazes that destroyed buildings in Independence.

At 6:46 p.m., Sunday, firefighters went to Rockwood Golf Club, 2400 S. Maywood Ave., on a reported structure fire.

Fire ripped through the clubhouse. No one was inside during the fire. No injuries were reported.

The blaze started in a trash receptacle area near the back door, according to the fire department. The fire quickly spread from the outside to the inside, causing $25,000 in damage.

Fire spread to underneath the deck, burning the floor and inside of the clubhouse.

The department classified the fire as accidental.

That wasn’t the case with a fire that broke out at 3500 S. Spring Ave. on Friday night.

The fire department has listed the South Spring Avenue fire as an arson. Independence police are investigating.

The alarm sounded at 9:23 p.m. The home was unoccupied and had been prior to the fire.

Damages totaled about $75,000. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters had to battle high winds and dry conditions during each blaze and were able to rapidly control the fires that did not spread to neighboring structures.
