  • Ryan M. “Switch” Smith, 24, of Blue Springs, Mo., passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, in Kansas City, Mo.
    A memorial service celebrating Ryan’s life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St., Blue Springs, 816-229-3276. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family for a college fund to be established for his daughter, Annabell Rose.
    Ryan was born April 24, 1988, in Lawrence, Kan. He was a 2006 graduate of Blue Springs South High School and veteran of the United States Army. Ryan entered the service in June of 2008 and was honorably discharged in November of 2011. During that time he served tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan and he was awarded the Commendation Medal. He was currently studying to become a certified EMT at the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District. Ryan was a very hard worker, unselfish and had a huge heart. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and had a passion for life. Ryan was quick to smile, dance and make people laugh. He was also a master of many voices and could do a perfect George W. Bush imitation.
    Survivors include his daughter, Annabell Rose; his father, Shane Smith of Blue Springs; his mother, Diana (Reynolds) Luppens and stepfather, Darren Luppens of Blue Springs; two sisters, Lindsay Smith (EJ Merlo) and their son, Easton, of Blue Springs, and Alyssa Luppens of Blue Springs; paternal grandparents, John and Vivian Smith of Tonganoxie, Kan.; maternal grandparents, Gerald and Rosemary Reynolds of Vinita, Okla.; maternal great-grandparents, T.W. and Alena Gardner of Miami, Okla.; stepgrandparents, Joe and Carol Luppens of Holden, Mo.; and stepgrandparents, Damon and Theresa Bowers of Independence, Mo.
