  • Independence police say a vehicle chase along 39th Street was prompted by “a pretty significant” shoplifting at the Walmart on Bolger.
Independence police spokesman Tom Gentry said officers were called to Walmart on a reported shoplifting at about 1 p.m. Thursday. The suspects took off as officers were arriving, Gentry said, leaving in a stolen vehicle. The police pursued the vehicle’s driver, who wound his way westward along 39th Street, then turned south on Lee’s Summit Road. The vehicle went through a chain link fence and over a small cliff down onto westbound Interstate 70.
The two occupants of the vehicle took off on foot and were captured near the Cracker Barrel restaurant south of the interstate. Gentry said some civilians helped officers in catching the suspects.
Gentry said the stolen items, as well as a gun, were found in the vehicle. He said no other vehicles were damaged in the pursuit.
