It’s that happy time of year again and I am really looking forward to it. The glorious meals of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, pumpkin pie, and other delicacies anticipated for months are just a few days away.

It’s that happy time of year again and I am really looking forward to it. The glorious meals of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, pumpkin pie, and other delicacies anticipated for months are just a few days away. Even more wonderful are the warm and memorable moments we will spend with family and friends talking about times past, present and future.  That is the Norman Rockwell painting we all look forward to each year, and for many, that is exactly what will transpire. However, for many others that will not be the reality they will experience.

There are a number of families who will not be having as much this year, especially for Christmas, due to job loss. Some families will not have as many sitting at the table with them this year due to having service members overseas, lack of funds to travel, or the passing of a loved one. All of them are good people, but many of them are going through times of trouble beyond their control. We need to remember them not only in our prayers, but also with our material support.

One of the ways we can help others who are hurting this year is by quietly “adopting” a family in need.  Talk to your local school principal, or church pastor to find out if there are any families they know about who could use some help and encouragement. Instead of spending so much on each other for Christmas gifts, use some of the money to purchase something for the little boy or girl whose family has to live in a motel because their family could no longer afford their own home.  You will be thrilled to see your own family members become excited about adopting another family for Christmas.

Another way to help others is to schedule a time with some friends and family to help the Salvation Army, City Union Mission, Community Services League or any other reputable organization whose primary concern is the well being of people. The result of your efforts will not only be a tremendous lift for those in need, but the tremendous positive effect it will have on you, your family, and friends, is a blessing money cannot purchase. The long-term effect in the lives of people who reach out to help others has a way of molding and shaping the future lives of everyone in a most positive way. By helping other people, there is also a transcendent feeling of doing something beyond ourselves that provides a sense of healing in our own life that you don’t want your children to miss.

Helping others in a substantial way is more than just committing a random act of kindness, which is also important, it is reaching into the life of another person with consequences that will last forever.
