A 24-year-old Independence woman was killed Wednesday night in a three-vehicle accident in Platte County.

A 24-year-old Independence woman was killed Wednesday night in a three-vehicle accident in Platte County.


Lauren R. Hance, who was the passenger of a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle, died in the accident that occurred after 9 p.m. Wednesday near northbound U.S. 169 at southbound Interstate 435. The driver of the motorcycle, Kansas City resident Emmanuel E. Calderon, 23, also died when a fourth vehicle swerved to avoid the first accident and struck him.


Hance died at the scene. Calderon was taken to Liberty Hospital, where he later died, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.


The other two vehicles involved in the initial crash were a 2006 Honda driven by Independence resident Joel A. Mashburn, 25, and a 1997 Ford driven by Liberty resident John T. Kelly, 52. Mashburn sustained serious injuries and was taken to North Kansas City Hospital.


Kelly was not injured.


The vehicle that struck Calderon, a 2010 Peterbuilt, was driven by Rising Pond, Ga., resident Labron S. Elrod, 45. He was  not injured.


The sequence of the crash is under investigation.


Both Hance and Calderon were wearing a safety device at the time of the initial crash, according to the highway patrol.
