A trailer belonging to an Independence Boy Scout troop was stolen early Thursday morning.

The trailer and its contents were discovered missing at about 9 a.m. Thursday by Dwight Fowler, who is Troop 334’s scoutmaster. The trailer was parked in front of his house at E. 52nd Terr. and S. Marion Ave. in Independence.

According to Fowler, a neighbor was awakened at approximately 3:30 a.m. Thursday to discover the trailer hitched to a white pickup, which had stopped about half a block from the Fowler residence. A man stepped out, possibly to secure the hitch, then he saw the neighbor, got back into the pickup and drove away at a high rate of speed.

The estimated value of the trailer, which is a white tandem-axle 2006 Homesteader trailer with a V-front, is about $5,500. It was insured, meaning the troop will only have to pay the $750 deductible to replace it.

“There’s been a lot of cases of Scout trailers getting stolen the past few years,” Fowler said. “I thought I did everything I could to prevent something like this from happening.”

In addition to storing most of the troop’s equipment at the Ridgewood Community of Christ Church, where the troop holds its meetings, Fowler left the trailer non-descript.

He said the trailer contained a large carport awning, two burn barrels, a 50-gallon water drum and possibly a Dutch oven. All combined, he said the contents added up to about $500, though most of the items were donated.

About a month and a half ago, Fowler said the shed where the troop keeps lawn care equipment at the church was broken into and everything was stolen. Mowing lawns had been the troop’s means of raising money.

“Because of this, we’re going to have to hold a few extra fundraisers, possibly of the selling cookies kind,” Fowler said. “I’m confident that in time we’ll recoup what we lost.”

It marks the second time a Boy Scout trailer in the area has been stolen in the past four months. In early July, a trailer full of camping equipment belonging to Troop 178 of Independence was stolen from a parking lot at Nativity of Mary school. The trailer was recovered several days later.

According to Independence police, the stolen trailer from Troop 334 remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the missing trailer is asked to call 816-474-TIPS or the Independence police department at 816-325-7300.
