Lisa Henning capped her brilliant volleyball career at Blue Springs High School with two special honors.

Lisa Henning capped her brilliant volleyball career at Blue Springs High School with two special honors.
The senior middle hitter earned Missouri State High School Volleyball Coaches Association (MHSVCA) first-team all-state recognition for the second year in a row and was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American second team.
The AVCA squad is made up of players from across the nation.
“Our only real goal was winning state, and we came in second, which was a disappointment,” said Henning, who signed to play volleyball at the University of Missouri last Friday, “but we had a great season and a lot of teams would have liked to have had the chance to play for the state championship.
“It’s really an honor to be named all-state for the second time and the All-American honor is really special because there are just 24 girls on the first team and 24 girls on the second team.”
Joining Henning of the MHSVCA Class 4 all-state team is fellow Wildcats Kirsten Erikson, a senior outside hitter who is going to Pittsburg (Kan.) State University. Senior setter Kieley Culbertson made second team all-state.
“This kind of helps get over the disappointment of not winning state,” Erikson said. “It’s a great honor – but it really caught me off guard. To be considered one of the best players in the state is a real honor.
“And to share it with Lisa and Kieley makes it even more special. They were such great teammates. We won a lot of games at Blue Springs and we had a lot of fun.”
Lee’s Summit North senior standout Marianne Beal was also a double winner, earning first-team all-state recognition and winning the Evelyn Gates Award, which is given to the top volleyball player in the metro area.
“Winning the Evelyn Gates Award was just amazing,” said Beal, a middle hitter who will play volleyball at the University of Kansas.
“It was something I could share with my entire team, because you don’t win an award like that without the support of your team.”
She said that being named all-state helped her realize a life-long dream.
“When I was a little kid, like in second grade, I came to North and saw the Wall of Fame,” she said, referring to a wall that features the photos of every North all-state performer from all prep sports.
“I was a goal setter way back then, although when I was in second grade I was playing basketball. Well, when I found out I made all-state in volleyball I realized that I was going to get my picture on the wall at school and that just pleased me so much. I don’t care who sees my picture, it just means a lot to a player who was once a little girl with big dreams. And those dreams came true.”
Two of coach Mike Espinosa’s St. Mary’s players made the Class 2 all-state team, twins Ashton and Alexis Nibert. Ashton, a senior setter, was named second team and Alexis, a senior outside hitter, earned honorable mention.
“I’m so happy for them,” Espinosa said. “They really deserve it. They work so hard and love the game and it’s great to see them rewarded by the coaches association.”
Lee’s Summit West junior Kylie Rice was a Class 4 honorable mention pick.
