  • The year I graduated from Van Horn High School I worked for less than a month for Tommy’s Drive In. I worked inside making cones, flipping hamburgers and dishing up fries. I worked until 12:30 each night, it was rough. I still had to study when I got home. I wanted good grades. I soon quit.
This small drive in restaurant was called “Tommy’s” or Texas Tommy’s. It was the first drive in that Tom Nigro had, I assume. It must have been where the restaurant chain started. I don’t know what ever happened to the man himself, yet some of his restaurants are still around. Mmmmmm! I loved the Italian steak sandwiches. The long, long subways were enough for two people. I wonder if they are still being sold.
I worked hard for that month. My boy friend walked me home each night. I sweated in the kitchen, while the carhops met the people. Everyone had a transistor radio going.
“Moments to remember” keeps coming to mind. Like the sands of time, this era is gone, only memories remain. Well, Texas Toms or Tommy’s is still around. I wonder where time has gone?
