  • Doris V. Monteil, one of the last of the greatest generation, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Mo.
    Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 Lee’s Summit Road, Independence. Visitation one hour prior, with rosary recited at 9:45 a.m. Interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
    Doris was born July 1, 1914, in Kansas City, Mo., to Edward and Margaret Porter. She attended Northeast High and trained as a Comptometer operator. Doris married in the 1930s and had two children. She worked at Martin’s Foundry in Centropolis during World War II. In 1949, she remarried Leo D. Monteil and they settled in Northeast Kansas City. Over the years, she worked for Katz Drug, B&G Hosiery and the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a Compt. Operator. She and Leo retired in the early 1970s and spent the next 20 summers at their lake cottage at Leaf Lakes, Minn. Her husband passed away in 1997; she sold her home and moved to “the Cottages” in Independence and in 2008 she entered the Villages of Jackson Creek.
    Doris is survived by her son, Lawrence Pearce (Dolores), Independence, Mo.; her daughter, Virginia Scida, Tully, N.Y.; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
