Students, staff and community members will soon have the opportunity to showcase their singing abilities in Sing! Blue Springs, a new fundraiser for the Blue Springs Education Foundation and the Blue Springs School District.

“Terri Lee, a retired Lucy Franklin teacher, came to me to see if I could help her get together an ‘American Idol’ type event,” said Katherine Barton, executive director of the education foundation. “She wanted to find a way to help Blue Springs schools and staff, and she had heard about an event in Johnson County, Kansas.”

The competition will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at Blue Springs High School, 2000 N.W. Ashton Drive.

It is open to students who are 15 to 21 years old, attending one of the high schools in Blue Springs. Graduates are also eligible.

A panel of judges will narrow the contestants to three finalists. The audience will then vote on the winner, who will receive $1,000. Proceeds from the event will go toward the foundation and each of the schools in the Blue Springs district. It is sponsored by the foundation and will be hosted by Dale Carter, a member of the Blue Springs City Council and of KFKF Radio.

Only soloists are eligible to enter the competition. No bands or groups are allowed.

“The hope is that this will be an extremely popular annual event, which will grow to the point that we will need to find a larger venue to accommodate the size of the audience,” Barton said. “I believe that it will attract many contestants from our district. The reality talent shows are so popular right now. I believe the community will enjoy attending the event to support a people they know who are competing, and  especially when they learn that the audience will vote to determine the winner.”

Tryouts for Sing! Blue Springs will begin at 9 a.m. Feb. 5 at Cordill-Mason Elementary, 4001 S.W. Christiansen Road. Guidelines for registration and auditions can be found at the main offices of each of the Blue Springs high schools or at the Blue Springs School District website, www.bssd.net. The non-refundable $5 fee is due at the audition.

“We believe it will be wonderfully entertaining,” Barton said. “We have such talented young people in our district. Also, the money will be used to support the Blue Springs School District and the education foundation.”
