A threat against Congressman Emanuel Cleaver has been tied to an Independence man.

TV station Fox4 reported Thursday on several threats made in the wake of Congress passing major health-care legislation last weekend.

“One of our staff in Kansas City took a phone call from a gentleman who lives in Independence who said that if the congressman voted for the health care, someone was going to put a bullet in his head,” Fox4 quoted Cleaver spokesman Danny Rotert as saying. Rotert said the congressman’s office has received hundreds of nasty calls and letters regarding health care reform.

Cleaver, a Democrat, represents Missouri’s 5th District, which is made up primarily of Independence and Kansas City.

The threats against Cleaver are among many instances reported around the county directed against about 10 Democrats who voted for the health-care legislation. Two Republicans now say they too have been targeted. No arrests have been made. Last weekend Cleaver was spat upon by a protester. He did not press charges.
