Truman boys tennis used clutch play in doubles to come away with a tight 5-4 win over Lee’s Summit North Monday at Santa Fe Trail Park.

Trailing 4-2 heading into doubles play, the Patriots swept the final three matches as Josh Smith and Chase Ruddell, David Franklin and Andy Muelleman and Matt Perry and Zach Felz prevailed in their respective matches.

“I was pleased that our doubles were able to pull through and win the match,” Truman head coach Tara Corwin said. “I was really pleased with some of our inexperienced players. They really showed up and put it together.”

Warren Frevert, Michael Iseman, Andrew Lam and Brad Mims won for North.

“We are really struggling to find some consistency,” Broncos coach Stuart Reece said. “Today we had some solid efforts in singles, but let Truman completely take control of the doubles matches.”

MARSHALL 5, GRAIN VALLEY 4: Eagles head coach Randy Draper likes the makeup of his team even after an early-season road loss at Marshall.

“Their top five guys are all seniors, and I knew that we would know a lot about our team after the match,” Draper said. “And we found out some good things.”

Grain Valley singles wins came from No. 1 Michael Draper and No. 5 Zach Norfolk and the top two teams of Michael Draper and Derek Bowlin and Colin Chastain and Dillon Perdue prevailed in doubles play.

PLATTE COUNTY 5, FORT OSAGE 4: The Indians got singles wins from Tucker and Hunter Hickey at the top of their lineup, a singles win by No. 6 Jake Ford and a doubles win from the Hickey brothers, but couldn’t hold on for the win.

“Tucker and Hunter Hickey both came through for us again with wins in tough matches,” Fort Osage head coach Jordan Groves said. “They both have shown some great mental toughness. I was also pleased with Jake Ford’s win.”

He is gaining more and more confidence in his shots and doing a better job of placing the ball where he wants.”
