  • A rare May snow fell on the Eastern Jackson County area Thursday afternoon.
The National Weather Service said it was just the fifth time it had snowed in the Kansas City area in May since records started being kept in 1899, and it was only the second time since then it has been measurable. As of 8 p.m. Thursday, the Weather Service had recorded a half inch.
The only other measurable snow in May was 1.7 inches on May 3, 1907. The Weather Service said that by this morning, 1 to 3 inches of snow was possible, with temperatures only reaching the high 30s to near 40. The Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory until 1 p.m. Friday.
