While it destroyed material things, it could not – and never could – destroy the persevering will of the American people. When the storm abated, the American spirit was stronger than ever.
As President Obama rightly noted, we face adversary not as Democrats or Republicans but as Americans.
We rolled up our good Samaritan sleeves in the hard-hit states of New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, North Carolina and Connecticut. The news was awash with the federal, state and local governments rallying to the call.
We saw neighbors, on their own, clearing clogged storm sewers and volunteers with boats and the National Guard with troops and trucks helping others flee their flooded homes and medical staffs evacuating patients to other hospitals. The list is endless.
FEMA personnel and first responders were everywhere, as were repair crews from around the nation.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and President Obama displayed bipartisan leadership.
Americans are responding to the Red Cross for donations. It is truly one of America’s finest hours. Just like so many in the past.
    It’s The American Way

    I’ll go!
    Me too!
    Count me in!
    I’m ready!
    Call when you need me!
    Glad to do it!
    No problem!
    What do you need?
    What else do you need?
    I’ll get others.
We’ll have it done in no time!
    Put your money away!
Why didn’t you call me sooner?
    Let me get my coat!
    Don’t worry. We’re here!
    I’ll handle it!
    Take my car!
    Stay for the night!
    Have you eaten?
    I’ll do that!
    Let’s pray about it!
    You are not alone!
    We’ll get by this!
    Do you need any money?
Pay me back when you can!
    We’ll laugh at this tomorrow!
    Call me!
Call me as soon as you get there!
    How do I get there?
Let me buy you a drink!
Tomorrow will be a better day!
    I’ll watch the kids!
    Let me do that!
You’re safe. That’s all that matters!
Here – this should fit you!
Aw, forget it. It was nothing!
    Here’s my number!
    What are friends for?
    Page 2 of 2 - We’ll get through this!
    You’d do it for me!
    It’s the American way!
I give you President John Adams’ toast: Independence forever.
