4th Annual Public Safety Citizens’ Advisory Board Forum and PSST Building Renovation Project Update to be held Nov.13
The Blue Springs Public Safety Citizens Police Advisory Board would like your input at the police department’s fourth annual public forum on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m.
The meeting will take place at the Howard L. Brown Public Safety Building Multi-purpose room, 1100 SW Smith St. in Blue Springs, and is a great opportunity for citizens to express their opinions on public safety in Blue Springs. In addition, a presentation regarding the progress on the Police Building renovation project will be presented by Burns and McDonnell Engineering who are the owner’s representatives on the project.
Advisory Board Chairman Tom Echerd will preside and encourages any interested person to attend.
“The forum is a unique opportunity for Blue Springs citizens to assist the police department by providing their insight into public safety needs,” he said. “The board believes that the partnership between police and community helps set priorities for the future.”
The permanent Public Safety Citizens’ Advisory Board was established in 2009 through the passing of City Ordinance 120.110. The legislation created a six-member board, comprised of two citizens from each Council District, along with non-voting ex-officio representatives from the Police Department, City Council, and a student from the Blue Springs School District. The board has met monthly since August 2009, on the second Tuesday of each month.
Current members of the Public Safety Board include Chairman Tom Echerd, Vice-Chairman Emil Spears, Janet Black, Lee Miller, Chuck Zuvers and Melodie Chrisman. Ex-officio members are Councilman Grant Bowerman and Chief Wayne McCoy, and the youth representative is Logan Smith of Blue Springs South High School.
As part of their on-going responsibilities, the Public Safety Board has the oversight of the expenditures related to the Public Safety Sales Tax. In addition, the ordinance that established the board also sets the requirement for the annual forum.
The public forum will begin with the building project presentation from Burns and McDonnell with time for questions. This initiative was approved as part of the Public Safety Sales Tax initiative passed by Blue Springs voters in April 2011. At a recent meeting, the Board established the following additional topics:
The Blue Springs Police Department’s Traffic Control Unit has made a concerted effort to reduce speeding violations in areas where accidents frequently occur, such as school zones and other areas in response to citizen’s requests. What concerns do you have regarding the enforcement of traffic ordinances in our community? What suggestions do you have?
What changes in coverage or services provided by our Animal Control Unit would you like to see?
What other services related to public safety would you like the Blue Springs Police Department provide or help coordinate?
