Area students are among those that have received college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. More than 2,500 winners were named throughout the United States. Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among the finalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.
The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 each year for up to four years of undergraduate study. About 1.5 million juniors entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship competition when they took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
n Julia Dury, Blue Springs, received the National Merit W. Harold Otto Scholarship from the University of Kansas. She plans to study civil engineering. She is a graduate of Blue Springs High School.
n Carnahan M. Lovewell, Independence, received the National Merit Truman State University Scholarship from Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. He plans to study chemical engineering and is a graduate of Truman High School.
n Brendan C. Smith, Lee’s Summit, received the National merit University of Nebraska-Lincoln Scholarship. He plans to major in computer science and is a graduate of Lee’s Summit North.
n Aaron M. Ratigan, Lee’s Summit, received the National Merit University of Nebraska-Lincoln Scholarship. He plans to major in mechanical engineering and is a graduate of Lee’s Summit West.
