Blue Springs wrestling coach Mike Hagerty was happy with his team’s results over the weekend in one of the toughest tournaments in the state.
That is, until the final rounds came around.
The Wildcats put six in the finals of the Winnetonka Tournament but went just 2-4 in championship matches. They put four more in third-place matches, but finished just 1-3 in those.
Josh Howk (140) and heavyweight Billy Everett led the way with titles as the Wildcats took second with 334.5 points. Defending state champion Park Hill claimed the title at 408.5, while Oak Park was third at 287.
“We wrestled pretty well. We have taken a lot of things away from this tournament that we can work on that will help us down the stretch,” Wildcats coach Mike Hagerty said. “I was not particularly excited how we performed towards the end of the tournament. We had a great semifinal round, putting 10 into the finals and third-place matches, but didn’t really close out the day in those final matches.”
Mauricio Garcia (112), Darick Lapaglia (119), Keenan Hagerty (135) and Lewis Foutz (189) also made the finals, but three of the four lost to Park Hill wrestlers.
Cullen Bufford (130) was the only Wildcat to win a third-place match. Greg Hegarty (125), Derick Sanders (171) and Kyle Brown each finished fourth. Tanner Bradbury (103) finished sixth.
COLUMBIA HICKMAN INVITATIONAL: Freshman 130-pounder Austin Eads went 4-1 to claim second place as Blue Springs South finished eighth out of 12 teams at the Columbia Hickman Invitational on Saturday.
“We had a very disappointing finish as a team,” Jaguars coach Doug Black said. “After coming off a solid couple of weeks, we kind of had a hiccup with the performance down in Columbia. Good thing that we have a couple of weeks to get people back healthy and make the necessary corrections that are need before districts.”
Eugene Merlo (171) took third with a 4-1 mark, Tevin Burnett (152) and Ian Storey (160) each finished fourth at 3-2 and John Nix (189) was 3-2 to finish fifth. Savon Alexander (103), Dakota Buchanon (112) and Joel Jackson (125) each finished seventh.
