A 44-year-old Independence man died Sunday morning when his car collided with another car on Valley View Road.
Independence Police Sgt. John Passiglia reported that at 11:30 a.m. a red 1991 Geo Prism was traveling south on Valley View Road north of Heartland Drive when the Prism's driver veered off the road to the right, overcorrected to the left and went out of control. The Prism went into the oncoming lane and was hit by a northbound gold 1994 Toyota Corolla.
The driver of the Prism was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. The driver was alone in the Prism. The Corolla's occupants, a 65-year-old Blue Springs man and his wife, 62, also were taken to Centerpoint. Their injuries were not life-threatening.
Passiglia said the name of the victim will be released Monday. It's not known what caused him to veer off the road. The crash is under investigation.
This was the third traffic fatality in Independence since Friday and the eighth in the city in 2009.
