  • Donna Pittman is no stranger to the Independence community. The owner of Curt’s Famous Meats in western Independence, she is constantly involved in the community. One of the organizations she helps is Big Brothers Big Sisters.
A volunteer since 1989, Pittman was honored with the Wireless Lifestyle Lifetime Friend Award during the Match Appreciation Banquet April 6 at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park, Kan. The award recognized adult mentors who maintain long-term friendships with their Little Sister or Little Brother.
During that first year 24 years ago, Pittman was matched with Lisa Hensley, an 8-year-old from Independence. Since then, Pittman has maintained a close friendship with Lisa, who has since graduated from Rockhurst University, earning both a bachelor and master degree.
“I became involved to, hopefully, become a mentor and friend to a special young lady,” Pittman said. “What I have enjoyed most in this is seeing how Lisa has grown and become such an educated and accomplished individual. I must say she is also very independent and is highly capable of making decisions, even ones that are difficult.”
1 Why is Big Brothers Big Sisters a beneficial organization in the community?
This organization is so beneficial because it helps establish role models and mentor as well as friends for children in single parent households.
2 What was your reaction to being recognized by Big Brothers Big Sisters?
The award was a total surprise. Also, Lisa coming into town from San Francisco was a total surprise as well. My good friend, Eileen Weir, arranged this.
3 Why is it important for you to give back to the community?
Communities need volunteers in many areas. This not only makes a community stronger, but hopefully, a better place for everyone. The exchange between the small business owner and the community is extremely important. I, as a small business owner, believe there should be an exchange between the business and the community and that both can benefit from this.
4 What makes Big Brothers Big Sisters so special?
Big Brothers Big Sisters is very special in that it assists young people and their mentor, or “Big” as they are called, to have a healthy, strong and long-lasting relationship, just as Lisa and I have been so fortunate to experience.
