Three area places will host the United States Tennis Association’s Tennis Night in America and Youth Registration Night this weekend and early next week.

These events are in conjunction with the USTA’s Tennis Night in America scheduled for Monday in more than 800 tennis facilities nationwide.

National Youth Registration Night events serve as “opening day” for parents to sign up their kids for league and team tennis play, including USTA Jr. Team Tennis.

The events are scheduled for these area venues:

• Saturday, 11 a.m. at Metro East Tennis Center on Vesper Road in Blue Springs.

• Sunday, 5 p.m. at the Courts at Riverside Park.

• Monday, 6 p.m. at the Sugar Creek Gymnasium.

These local events will feature free instruction, games, drills for all abilities, as well as food and drink “in a fun atmosphere,” according to the USTA Missouri Valley.

Also included will be the BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup at New York City’s Madison Square Garden Monday. The ESPN2 televised event will feature four of the top seven-ranked professional women in the world with Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic.
