St. John Lalande Catholic School in Blue Springs will be honoring all students who participated in the annual Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Poster Contest at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The event will also honor a respected community leader who has made a positive impact on the youth of the school through the DARE Program: Officer Charlie Waites of the Blue Springs Police Department.

Waites is not your typical police officer, according to a press release from the school.

As a DARE instructor working in the Blue Springs School District, Waits works with dozens of students every day, hoping to encourage them to make wise decisions like saying no to drugs and alcohol use.

By working in DARE, Waites is credited with working long hours and teaching a multitude of safety and education concepts including how to resist unnecessary dangers and violence.
